Together in ministry
Rev. Koshy Baby and Dr. Joicy Koshy, both born in Kerala, are missionaries to New Delhi. God brought them together in a miraculous way, and they were married on 14 December 1995. Since then, He has been using them as a team to impact thousands across India with the Gospel of Jesus Christ.
The ministry to the slum dwellers of New Delhi, born from one morning’s encounter.
Rev. Koshy Baby’s testimony
At the age of 18, lying on my deathbed as a battle for life was going on, little did I realize that God was setting me apart for His ministry. He miraculously raised me from that sickbed and ignited in my young heart a fire and desire to reach the nation of India with the Gospel of Jesus Christ.
The Lord began preparing me by leading me from my hometown in Kerala to the most challenging western state of India — Maharashtra, a place where the Good News of our loving Saviour had never reached. Within a couple of years, through tearful prayers and faith in the Almighty, the Lord brought revival in seven villages.
After completing my studies at the Southern Asia Bible College in Bangalore, I waited on the Lord for direction. Around this time, He placed the city of New Delhi in my heart. Little did I know then that this capital city of 17 million people would change my life forever.
One morning, as I was preparing to teach at a local Bible College, a sobbing mother from a nearby slum knocked on my door. With tears, she shared her heart-breaking story: her drug-addicted husband had just sold their 12-year-old daughter to a pimp for Rs. 20,000 (US $500) to buy more drugs. My heart was shattered. How could this be? I saw the pain and hopelessness in her eyes, and in dismay I began to cry out to the Lord.
That day, I resolved to be a ray of hope.
To reflect Christ’s love to those living in sin, poverty, and oppression. This life-changing encounter birthed the ministry to the slum dwellers of New Delhi, a calling I continue to live out today.
Dr. Joicy Koshy’s testimony
At the age of 10, I suffered from a severe rheumatic heart condition, and doctors had given up hope on me. My father, who had come to North India as a missionary from Kerala in 1954, was in another city at the time. He rushed to see me and prayed that if God spared my life, he would commit me for His ministry. God healed me completely.
By His grace, I went on to complete my M.Phil and later my Ph.D. in Economics. After my marriage to Pastor Koshy, the Lord brought me to New Delhi, where He miraculously led us into ministry among less fortunate children in the slums and to countless perishing souls in the capital city.
Today, we are grateful to the Lord for His faithfulness and to our partners for their prayers and generous giving. Through this work, we have been able to impact more than 2,000 children across 8 slum centres and minister to hundreds every Sunday in 8 different languages.
Truly, it is the Lord’s doing, and it is marvellous in our eyes!
More than 2,000 children across 8 slum centres, and hundreds every Sunday in 8 languages.
What happens next
The work that began with one knock at the door is carried today by a church, a team and a city full of people still to reach.
